After doing some research though I discovered why. To set up the Beam, it requires that you do so through its app on a device that is connected to your Wi Fi via a 2. 4GHz frequency Also security needs to be WPA/WPA2. Now most routers these days are dual band 2. 4GHz and 5GHz and devices will connect based on their preference. When attempting to connect my Beam, my Xperia Z5 Premium phone was connecting to my Wi Fi via 5 GHz, even though I was attempting to do it via 2. 4GHz. The only way I was able to overcome this was to use an old tablet with an older Android OS and going into my Wi Fi Settings and selecting the 2. 4GHz band Android 6. 0. 1 and later seems to have dropped that setting.

If your budget is limited, it’s definitely worth a look. A similar idea comes in the form of the smart listener. Again, the idea here is that you don’t rip out your existing smoke detectors, you just install an extra piece of hardware that can listen for an alarm going off and alert your phone if it hears one, turning a traditional alarm system into a smart one. This is different from the Roost battery because the alerter simply plugs into a power outlet there’s no battery backup, however, so if the power goes out, the device won’t be able to hear the siren. The Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight, at $50, is currently the best option on the market. It’s another great choice if you don’t want to replace the gear you already have.
